Parents: (late) Arthur John Howard and Jean Compton Mackenzie.

C.B.E. 1998.

Joined RSC in 1966.

Associate Artist Royal Shakespeare Company since 1967.

Married long-time partner, Sally Beauman, in 2004. One son, James, one grandchild.

Began career at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, 1958.
